September/October 2024 We read that Malawi was trying to encourage tourism and had been busy stocking their large reserves with game including the Big Five. Malawi is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. From the Lonely Planet’s we found an excellent tourist agents – www.nkhatabaysafaries.com After our long flight and night at a hotel not too far from the airport, we were met by Davie and his driver Wilson. There is no doubt that Davie and Wilson made our holiday, they were kind, helpful and efficient – we became firm friends after 30 days in Malawi. At Davie’s suggestion, we took £250 worth of suntan lotion donated by Boots chemist, for the Albino people who are poor and find it difficult to afford the necessary cream. This cream was doated widely during our travels. We also took laptop, phones etc. which were doated to a country school in the north of the country. We had a wonderful trip visiting a school, driving on the most dreadful dirt roads, going to stay in so many different accommodations from lovely luxury lodges to small huts with no electricity and compost loos and going out in the lake to see the local fishermen fishing. While driving through the country we were struck seeing so many people walking, often in the middle of nowhere, with containers of water on their heads – most do not have water or electricity in their houses. Children often walk miles to school, starting at 7am till 12 noon Our highlights must be the different reserves and the game we saw. We sat and watched lions very close to us, lots of elephants, leopard and lots of antelope, hippo and buffalo. At the end of our trip, we did some snorkelling in Lake Malawi, a large freshwater lake, which looks more like a sea. Our photographs below give a flavour of our trip.
