Derek and Ann’s Travels in Chile
FEBRUARY 2012 After our fantastic trip to Antarctica we arrived back in Ushuaia to wonder where next. We decided a get a bus and see a bit of Chile and go into the/ Torres del Paine where they had recently had a fire and a lot of the area was+ devastated. We hired a car and drove around. One day we were driving along when we saw a couple of condors flying above us, THEN more and more. We stopped the car, apart from one car driving off ahead, there was no one. We saw in the distance a kill and so walked towards it and saw masses of condors either sitting on a hill near by or eating the carcass Quite an amazing site (see our photo). As they flew overhead I was a bit worried but Derek reminded me that they only eat dead meat and we were still alive!!! We also drove round the some of the Lakes and the scenery was amazing. We enjoyed our short stay in Chile and would like to go back. Eventually we caught several buses and arrived in Buenos Aries for our flight back to the UK

CHILE For this holiday Derek booked all the flights and accommodation which went exactly as planned except the 4 nights boat trip up the coast with Navmag. Boat went 2 says early so we missed it and had to re-arrange our trip- now we gather they are very unreliable so beware. All the hired cars(3 in all) were fine. We needed a SUV type of car as the roads are gravel in some parts. We drove along part of the Carretera Austral (rout 7) which we understood was a dangerous road in parts. We had no problem on this long road and most of the roads are frequently graded, but some areas are single track. The holiday was an extremely scenic one, the scenery of the mountains and lakes is simply spectacular. Wonderful waterfalls and blue blue water. We kept on wanting to take more photographs of the scenery. The highlights have to be the lovely mountain scenery, the wonderful marble caves at Rio Tranquilo, the Atacama desert with the rock formations, some of the 500 geysers (we had to drive early in the morning in the dark to reach them on gravel roads) and swimming in the salt lake (only allowed in for 25 mins). The people were extremely kind and helpful and we had no problems, but as we don't speak Spanish the translator on the phone was invaluable. All in all a lovely holiday but we did not see a Puma or go on the boat trip up the coast. We only had 1 days rain. Please remember you can always contact us on our website and we can give you any information you want as to transport and places we stayed at. We have a full diary of our holiday
